How to fish it
Three things that land more varaal
Cast past the gap
Land the frog on the weed, not in the open water. Drag it to the edge of the hole and let it sit.
Walk, then stop
Short twitches on a slack line make it walk. Most strikes come on the pause after two or three twitches.
Count two, then set
Wait until the line moves or you feel weight. A soft para-rubber body collapses so the hook clears — set hard and keep the rod low.
Where & when
Kerala's frog calendar
Topwater frogs work from the time the monsoon water drops until the pre-monsoon heat. Here is where to be each month.
Kuttanad paddy drains
Harvest water drops, varaal stack in the drains and petta channels. Fish the pads at first light.
Thrissur Kole wetlands
Shallow, weedy, loaded with fish. The 3 cm frogs over hyacinth gaps.
Vembanad canals & backwater edges
Fish the hyacinth lines and kayal margins at dusk. Bigger varaal, bullseye in the deeper cuts.
Ghats river pools
Low, clear water in the Chalakudy, Periyar and Muvattupuzha. Natural colours, long casts, quiet feet.
