Three things decide which reel is right for you — its size, gear ratio and drag. Match these to your target fish and rod, then pick the reel type that suits your fishing.
Reel size
Reel sizes run from 1000 up to 20000. Choose 1000–3000 for light freshwater and lure fishing, 4000–6000 as an all-rounder and for light saltwater, and 8000 or above for big saltwater species.
Gear ratio
Gear ratio is how much line you retrieve per turn of the handle. A high ratio (6.0:1 or more) gives a fast retrieve for lure fishing, while a lower ratio (around 5.0:1) gives more cranking power for bigger fish.
Drag
Drag is the reel's stopping power, measured in kilograms. The bigger and harder-fighting your target fish, the more maximum drag you'll want.
